The “Hopital Metropole”

What does the future hold for major facilities in the region of Marseille in view of the future Aix-Marseille-Provence conurbation? In 2015, the Inter-ministerial Mission for the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolitan Project asked La 27e Région to conduct a foresight and creative study of the future conurbation from the standpoint of a public structure qualified as a “sentinel” facility, the Hôpital Nord (North Hospital) of Marseille.

Located in the heart of the northern districts of the city, the Hôpital Nord is strategically positioned – far from the center of Marseille, isolated in an urban area with insufficient public transportation services, it is nonetheless the geographic center of the future conurbation. This hospital, historically renowned for medical excellence, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and needs to modernize, primarily to meet increasingly complex situations for accommodating patients and for temporarily housing their families in districts undergoing tremendous change. The Hôpital Métropole residence, for instance, is specifically focused on the site’s accommodation capacity and on the deep ties between this facility and its sphere of influence, i.e., its immediate surroundings, the urban area, its built properties elsewhere…. and the new conurbation.
