Background

In the context of today’s multiple crises, it is imperative to prepare current and future generations of public servants to better address ecological and social challenges through innovation. But how may we support the professional development of those responsible for public innovation? How does training contribute to re-anchoring innovation within a more holistic, political, and strategic approach? How can we support the needs of elected officials tasked with addressing more complex issues, such as the ecological transition?

Today, there is a multitude of schools, campuses, modules, and training sessions dedicated to public innovation. We propose here a safe space where those responsible for designing them will have the opportunity to reflect and discuss what really needs to be taught, for what purpose, and how to improve the quality of training, and ultimately, create greater impact.

Approach

  • To strengthen the state of the art in public innovation, given that many long-established theories remain virtually unknown or rarely used in France by both private and public innovators, and to enrich the educational content of existing training programs;
  • To create a reflective and experimental space for collaboration among training providers (CNFPT, INET, INSP...), practitioners, and experts;
  • Strengthen the innovation capabilities of public servants by reconnecting their concrete challenges with methods for addressing complexity (such as mission-based innovation or experimental governance approaches);
  • Document and disseminate the lessons learned from the program, and build a shared resource bank.

Method

A series of workshops (held once a year) bringing together a diverse group of partners at the intersection of fieldwork, training, and research, with themes selected based on the needs of the partners and participants. The creation of a safe space for dialogue will help inform existing training programs, provide robust and up-to-date content, and assist those responsible for developing training programs, with the support of practitioners and researchers.

Inter-sessions, which may take the form of tool testing, in-depth thematic exploration, etc.
