Lieux Communs

Here and there, in France and across Europe, there are forms of collective resource management that fall outside the 'entirely public' or 'entirely private' models. These new forms of collective organisation are part of the public-commons partnership movement, which highlights ways in which residents, local stakeholders and institutions cooperate to develop and enhance local resources within a commons-based approach. They are very often drivers of social innovation, generate new ways of shaping the city, rebuild a sense of community where isolation is felt, help to rethink democracy and create new forms of economic activity.

How can we manage a facility, a natural space or a service of public interest whilst involving local stakeholders - residents, voluntary organisations, economic actors and other public institutions, etc. - more actively? How can we allocate roles, share decision-making and responsibility, and devise more collective management approaches? To what extent do such approaches enable us to formulate new responses to the challenges of revitalisation and social, environmental and democratic transition facing our cities?
Following on from the 'Enacting the Commons' initiative, 'Lieux Communs' is an experimental programme designed to help local authorities implement or support these new processes of cooperation at a regional level.
